creatives find a new form of artistic expression in face masks

The past few months have been a testament to the design world’s ability to change with the changing times. Concepts of social distancing and contact elimination are now a part of the newer narratives which shape design. While certain brands and fashion houses have channelled their resources towards mass productions of protective gear for frontline workers, others face criticism over capitalizing on the crisis by selling overpriced essentials and supplementals. However, the art world points to a different perspective. The unassuming facemask, set to be an unequivocal constant in our wardrobes for the foreseeable future has been turned into a canvas for artistic expression. Independent artists and creative professionals across the globe have been designing facemasks that are thoroughly unique and inventive. While some of these would be effective against COVID 19, others are simply meant to be ornamental – sufficing as wearable art.

From surreal, handknitted fabrications to Darth Vader-inspired contraptions, we’ve rounded up our favourite mask designs to have come out of the past few months.
