DP Trends: Statement Lights Making Waves In These Indian Homes

Bold and expressive, statement lights are reshaping Indian homes—merging function with form to become trend-setting icons of contemporary design.

A practical element of interior design, lighting can do more than just illuminate a space. Especially true with decorative lighting, fixtures with sculptural qualities, artisanal lights crafted from textured materials, and larger-than-life statement pieces can define the overarching theme of a space. Statement lights with fluid forms can serve as focal points, introducing movement into a space. Biophilic light design can be modern yet rustic when crafted from natural materials. Whether it’s retro-inspired lighting design or minimalist pieces that speak volumes, statement lights in home design are more than just a trend. In these Indian homes, a slew of thoughtfully selected statement lights is woven into a larger narrative of intricately crafted worlds in which illuminated fixtures not only shape but are also shaped by each space.

Rahethaan, a sprawling multigenerational residence on the Gujarat coast, fuses the airiness of Mediterranean architectural elements with the minimalist ethos of Mid-century design grounded in materials like wood, glass, and natural stone. From modern takes on Kutch textiles to a sculptural stairwell with light orbs and murals by House of Berserk, the residence reflects a contemporary Indian sensibility. Three tremendous plantain leaves swirl inside the soaring volume of the family room of this soulful 13,000-sq-ft home. It is here that Shailesh Rajput’s larger-than-life botanical luminaire—a composition of metallic floating leaves—interjects the home’s core, composed of vaulted intersections, clerestory windows and hooded lintels. “This unexpected design element invites discovery and engagement from multiple viewpoints, including the space below and the Juliet balcony above. The space has a gallery-esque quality, so we wanted to incorporate art that would not only adorn the floor and walls but also activate the space above,” says Huzefa Rangwala of MuseLAB.

Set against an illuminated POP ceiling patterned with artisanal detailing in the formal living room, a pair of statement lighting fixtures by Olie are quite unlike any other, radiating with rhythm through the interplay of ceramic details that block and texture light, metal lines, and glowing fabric. “We sought a statement piece that combines beauty with an organic, evolving presence. Olie’s poetic and dynamic designs, which appear to shift and pulse with life even in stillness, made them the perfect collaborators,” says Jasem Pirani of MuseLAB. Olie’s concept, ‘Wilding,’ birthed this light sculpture inspired by the wild, wondrous and otherworldly nature of mushrooms, wildflowers and seeds.

Blending contemporary sensibilities and subtle nods to tradition, County 107 was designed to reflect the personalities and desires of a young couple who value intentional living. Designed by The Concreate Story, the 3,500-sq-ft home in Noida exudes warmth thanks to the generous use of natural materials, all the while challenging the predictability of linear architecture. Three rotatable structures serve as mobile sculptural elements between the dining, living and lounge areas for adaptable living for the homeowners who have a penchant for hosting. The ‘Voyage Linear’ pendant lamp by Clay Mango adds a touch of quiet luxury with instant impact against the clean, linear geometry of the living room. Crafted from eco-conscious materials like vegan leather and bamboo mesh, the Clay Mango chandelier holds its own during daylight hours and makes a subtle statement after dark. “The chosen piece is both sculptural and permeable, allowing light and sight to pass through without overwhelming the space. With a backless couch as visual anchor of the room, we knew the lighting had to complement the openness without interrupting it,” says architect Nishtha Duggal of The Concreate Story, adding that the chandelier is a reminder that lighting goes beyond illumination to create a mood.

In the master bedroom, every design element is decidedly intentional, impactful and minimalist. Embracing the philosophy of refined restraint, an Italian marble accent wall is paired with cane furniture, while a neutral palette is brought to life through an assortment of textures. A ‘Fanny Chandelier Lamp’ by Orange Street, made from cotton, wood and mild steel with a three-foot drop, is “a study in vertical elegance,” Rohan Gera, co-founder of The Concreate Story, explains, “Strategically placed to draw the eye upward and emphasise the room’s height, it serves as an architectural punctuation mark, giving the room a sense of drama without adding visual clutter.”

In Bangalore, Studio GSA’s Renata unfolds as a dynamic interplay of light, materiality and spatial fluidity. Across the 4015-sq-ft residence in Bangalore, openness courts intimacy using textures for depth and glass that replaces solid barriers. Sculptural lighting elements inspired by the beauty of nature and a reflective marble flooring contribute to the ever-evolving play of light and shadows. There is movement in the light-flooded living room with sculptural furniture and lights, and a cool-grey basalt stone-clad column. There’s the Shailesh Rajput Studio wall lamp ‘Seepi,’ a minimalist oyster-inspired light handcrafted from aluminium sheet and blown glass from the Jal series. “The Seepi light brings a sense of softness and fluidity to the living space of Renata. Nestled like a piece of art within its shell, it introduces an organic contrast to the otherwise strong architectural lines,” say designers Gaurav Panjani and Santosh Belani of the Bangalore-based Studio GSA.

In the dining area, mouth-blown iridescent glass dewdrops cling to handcrafted leather bands. Enveloped in basalt, it is a visual delight. “It creates a cozy grounded core. The ‘Dew Drop Pendant’ from ALC Studio with its smoky glass and leather detailing introduces a delicate sculptural softness that completes the visual frame while marrying strength with subtlety,” says Belani.

An eye-catching lighting fixture can be transformative when layered with task and ambient lighting, so much so that entire rooms can be designed around a singular statement light. Larger spaces, those with a double-height ceiling, exude warmth and grandeur with statement fixtures that allude to scale. Smaller spaces would do well to incorporate an oversized pendant crafted from natural fibres or a metallic piece for modern home design. Whatever the size of the space, statement lighting can infuse your home with both character and scale, making it uniquely yours.
