#DPExclusive: This Mumbai Home Is A Masterclass in Quiet Luxury and Avant-garde Aesthetics

Perched high in the clouds, this ‘villa in the sky’ designed by Quirk Studio redefines contemporary living with its spatial layout, exquisite materiality and intricate artistry.

In contemporary luxury, the ultimate urban indulgence is the luxury of stillness and the space to rejuvenate. Perched high above the city, where the frenetic energy of Mumbai dissolves into a distant hum, this 4,500 sq. ft. duplex home manifests as a sophisticated modern-day villa. Spanning the 21st and 22nd floors, the residence is characterised by an expansive architectural narrative, meticulously rendered in a palette of rare marbles and warm timber, and anchored by a collection of sculptural, avant-garde furniture.

Home to a family of four – a couple in their 40s with two children – Noire House conceived by Mumbai-based Quirk Studio presents itself as a blueprint for quiet luxury living. Debunking the notion of associating ornamentation with richness, the design for this home focuses on scale, proportions and material tactility. Designers Shivani Ajmera and Disha Bhavsar share, “The client’s brief was simple: creating a luxurious and refined home that balances functionality with sophistication. They desired a residence that felt dramatic yet elegant, and seamlessly combined comfort with an elevated aesthetic.”

Two Make One!

Playing with fluidity in movement within the architectural restraints, the design embraces openness; just as one would experience in a villa. The lower level opens up into a living-dining space, clad in continuous white marble, which reflects natural light making the space feel even more voluminous. The stark contrast between the softness and subtlety of neutral colours is achieved with bright red and gold accents introduced by the artworks and lighting fixtures. From the arched doorways to the bespoke selection of furniture each element makes a subtle yet striking statement through the space. Adjacent to this space is a double-height terrace separated by floor to ceiling fenestrations, opening the home to the outdoors and expanding the volume further.

The upper level unfolds into expansive bedroom suites, each with a dedicated walk-in wardrobe and lavish en-suite bathrooms. The master bedroom embraces the calm and comfort of the neutral colour palette paired with soft curves while the artwork becomes the showstoppers of the space. The second bedroom embodies the warmth of woody brown tones and soft curves creating an intentional and peaceful sanctuary. Adjacent to the bedrooms, the mandir and a quiet study nook on this level offer contemplative pockets of solitude.

Rooted In Function

Form follows function, especially when dealing with optimum utilisation of limited space. The den adjacent to the living area hosts a hidden murphy bed, which hosts the capacity to turn the space into a complete bedroom. The multi-use and transformable quality of each space reverbs within the ethos of the design intent.

The showstopper element, a sculptural ribbon-like staircase in rich wood that wraps around a transparent capsule elevator, adds to the fluidity of movement, connecting the two levels. “It was a functional requirement requested by the client. The design team worked meticulously to ensure that the elevator was accommodated without disrupting spatial harmony or compromising the visual integrity of the interiors,”  the designers explain.

Elegance Served With A Pinch Of Drama

“While Noire literally translates to ‘black’, the name was chosen for its emotive and conceptual

undertones rather than its literal meaning. It embodies a sense of mystery, drama, and

sophistication — qualities that define the home’s character. The word also evokes an aura of

luxury and bold elegance, mirroring the design ethos that runs through the residence. It’s an

expression of mood and feeling, not merely a reference to colour,” the designers explain. Soft, absorbent textures and a muted colour palette of lime-washed walls and warm wood finishes utilise the abundance of natural light due to the home’s location and induce a sense of calm, serenity and cohesion.

The master suite features parquet flooring in rich wood tones, while the bathrooms across the home are clad in deeply veined marble and English patterned floors over an immersive, tactile experience. Exhibiting contemporary craftsmanship, the furniture and artisanal lighting curation add character and a rich accent to the space.

Noire House exemplifies the distinctive nature of modern day quiet living, stemming within ultimate luxury, through intelligent spatial design, material selection and regal accents. It shatters the common notion of congested apartment living and serves itself as the perfect ‘villa in the sky’.
