Hitesh Bhanushali, a hotel management graduate, and Neelam Bhanushali, an interior designer, co-founded Embelliish in 2006. Hitesh and Neelam’s complementary strengths –his precision in operations and her creative vision –shaped Embelliish into a brand that celebrates artistry while delivering functionality. The brand has revolutionised the designer curtain industry in India. Over time, the brand has evolved into a renowned custom design studio, attracting clients across India. In this interview, the founders of Embelliish share some insight into the soft furnishing industry, along with a few tips on picking the right ones for your space.

1. What materials and textiles are primarily used for the fabrics at Embelliish? 

Hitesh Bhanushali: We combine high-quality natural fibres like silk, cotton, and linen with innovative, new-age textiles made from man-made yarns. These engineered fabrics mimic the luxurious feel of natural fibres while offering enhanced durability, superior drape, and resilience in challenging climates.

Neelam Bhanushali: Embelliish is deeply committed to preserving India’s rich cultural heritage by reviving traditional weaving and dyeing techniques that might otherwise fade away. By collaborating directly with local artisans, we keep the ancient skills alive and give them a modern twist. Each collection is designed to honour traditional craftsmanship while fitting seamlessly into contemporary lifestyles, creating a living dialogue between the past and the present. 

3. As Embelliish collaborates with skilled local artisans and blends traditional techniques with modern aesthetics, who trains the karigars to achieve the brand’s precision? 

HB: Our in-house master artisans, alongside our team of experienced designers, conduct training workshops for the karigars. This collaborative effort ensures that every piece is crafted to our high standards while staying true to the authentic techniques that form the backbone of our heritage. 

4. In what ways does Embelliish support sustainability and ethical practices? 

HB: Sustainability is a core value at Embelliish. We source our raw materials responsibly 

and employ eco-friendly dyes and production processes to minimize our environmental footprint. In addition, we work directly with local artisans under fair-trade practices, ensuring that our products are not only luxurious and beautiful but also ethically produced and environmentally sustainable.

5. From an aesthetic perspective, what are your best tips on styling your home with luxury fabrics?

NB: Start with a neutral foundation to let your luxury fabrics shine. Layer different textures and patterns to add depth, but also be mindful of balance; overcrowding a space can dilute the impact. Use statement pieces strategically to create focal points, and consider how natural light and the surrounding decor will interact with your selections. Ultimately, aim for a harmonious blend that makes the space feel inviting and sophisticated.

6. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends in interior design and soft furnishings?

NB: We maintain our edge by attending international design fairs, networking with global and local design communities, and constantly researching market trends. This continuous learning process allows us to integrate innovative ideas with our heritage-inspired approach, ensuring collections remain fresh, relevant, and ahead of the curve. 

7. What is a fundamental rule that one should follow while buying soft furnishings? 

HB: A fundamental rule is to invest in quality and timeless design over fleeting trends. When buying soft furnishings, look beyond the immediate appeal of a fabric’s colour or texture. Prioritise craftsmanship, durability, and how a piece can enhance your living space for years to come. This means choosing items that are not only visually appealing but also built to withstand everyday use and evolving design sensibilities.

8. What are the common mistakes made by buyers while purchasing soft furnishings, and how can they avoid them? 

NB: Many buyers make the mistake of treating every window treatment the same. Each window has a unique character — its size, natural light, and surrounding details like veneer finishes, furniture, and even the outdoor view, influence the final look. One should tailor their choices to the specific context of each window. 

9. Looking back, is there a mistake that taught you something important?

NB: One of the most important lessons we learned early on was the danger of scaling too quickly without establishing a robust feedback loop. In our initial days, our eagerness to innovate sometimes led us to rush decisions, bypassing critical insights from our customers and team. This experience taught us to slow down, listen more intently, and refine our processes continuously, balancing ambition with thoughtful, measured growth.

HB: The Heritage Collection is particularly close to our hearts. It stands out because it masterfully fuses traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary design.
