3 Home Theatres That Take Movie Nights & Popcorn Seriously

From biophilic warmth to parametric futurism, these three design-led home theatres transform movie nights into immersive experiences.

With the Summer holidays looming over us, Netflix and Chill is the perfect getaway from balmy and unhurried evenings. Keeping up with these plans, home theatres have been on the rise, as the lingering aftermath of COVID casts a shadow on the cinema-going experience. Historically, private screening rooms were used by Hollywood movie producers and affluent cinema patrons in the United States in the early 20th century. However, by the mid-century, advances in television and audio technology transformed these exclusive screening spaces with a curtain and the film projectors into more accessible entertainment dens. In India, the concept began gaining traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s when Western influences were travelling. What once began with films projected onto makeshift surfaces—curtains, walls, and temporary screens—has today evolved into meticulously crafted spaces.

With acoustics calibrated to perfection, oversized seating, cinematic lighting, and decadent material palettes, these rooms move far beyond the idea of a simple viewing space, becoming intimate theatres for hedonistic rituals. So, DP grabs the popcorn and settles in these three home theatres for a movie marathon.

In a 10,500 sq. ft. home in Ahmedabad, conceived by Tvasttr Architects, a home theatre transforms into a snug realm, ditching the usual black box vibe. The home, monikered ‘Roots to Roof Villa,’ embodies a biophilic aesthetic, where contemporary elements, Mid-Century influences, and gallery-esque interiors converge, paying homage to Indian artisanal culture. Extending this design philosophy into its entertainment den, the home theatre mirrors the villa’s overall design language, making it the perfect setting for a movie night. “The result is a home theatre that feels luxurious yet deeply personal, a space designed not just for entertainment, but for immersive family experiences,” explains Sharvin J Patel of Tvasttr Architects.

Seamlessly moving from the colossal, natural-light-drenched spaces to the intimate space, the home’s theatre is paired with a pantry-cum-bar and a powder room for functional ease. With oversized leather armchairs, a sleek projection screen, and speakers subtly embedded across the room, the space orchestrates an immersive cinematic experience. Corralled in a brooding palette of black, taupe, and tan that echoes the home’s earthy scheme, the theatre is layered with fabric wall panelling from Drape shoppe, suede finishes, wood veneers, and plush carpets. “Soundproofing was achieved through a combination of acoustic wall panelling, insulated partition walls, and a treated ceiling system to minimise sound leakage and external disturbances,” points Patel. Transforming the room into an immersive experience, the acoustical niceties are conducted by Future Automation solutions.

This 5,000 sq. ft. home in Mumbai by IPIPL orchestrates a sense of dystopia paired with a sense of warmth within the home theatre. Dubbed ‘Navodaya,’ it unfolds as a study in contemporary luxury where meticulous planning crafts an interplay of light and texture that is at once chic, cocooning and seamlessly balances between social living and serene retreat. Echoing the home’s fluid and layered design language, the theatre finds its place within the private zone, unfolding as a comfy setting for cinematic escape. “The inspiration stemmed from the idea of creating a space that feels both intimate and high-performance, balancing comfort with a strong visual identity,” explains Amit Porwal, Principal designer of IPIPL.

In keeping with the home’s penchant for details, this room features sculpted panels that serve as soundproofing panels appearing on the walls and continuing to the ceiling. “These custom-made acoustic panels were specially designed for the space, allowing us to seamlessly integrate performance with a strong visual identity,” Porwal shares. He adds, “The overall envelope of the room is treated to minimise sound leakage, ensuring a crisp audio experience within while maintaining privacy for the rest of the home.” Guided by the theory of unexpected red, leather recliners in deep burgundy tones by Little Nap, punctuate the theatre’s muted metallic and earthy palette, lending the theatre a darker, more cocooned ambience.

In a 9,000 sq. ft. duplex by Studio Tattva in Mumbai, the theatre is conceived through the lens of algorithmic geometries, where patterns and symmetry orchestrate a strikingly futuristic spatial language. ‘Kabani’ channels Bombay’s multifarious architectural heritage, weaving neoclassical restraint with Art Deco nuances under a wellness-driven design ethos. As the residence lingers in echoes of the past, the theatre strides into the future through emphatic geometric motifs. “The home theatre is envisioned as a bespoke cinematic sanctuary, articulated through a futuristic parametric design language that celebrates fluidity, precision, and sensorial immersion,” avers Aditi Savani of Studio Tattva.

The tiered seating with plush cobalt armchairs by Stanley enveloped in sinuous parametric surfaces wraps the walls, melding the rigidity of orthogonal planes. “Subtle, integrated linear lighting is thoughtfully embedded within these contours, casting a soft, ambient glow that accentuates the geometry while evoking an intimate, cinematic mood,” says Savani. Drenched in muted hues, the theatre pairs micro-perforated panels, acoustic fabrics, and layered textures with engineering by Sounds Good AV in collaboration with Green heart consultant, ensuring optimal diffusion and absorption for a cinema-grade sonic experience. “Advanced soundproofing systems are discreetly concealed within the parametric framework, ensuring superior sound insulation and pristine audio clarity,” the designer explains. The theatre screen by True Vision and HVAC by Arhaan Technology, ultimately makes the home theatre a futuristic expression, where parametric geometry and advanced technology transform entertainment into an immersive design statement.
